Kilburn is very centrally located between Cricklewood, West Hampstead, Queens Park and Maida Vale. Kilburn is a bustling area featuring an extensive high street packed with well known branded stores, popular independent shops, banks and a lively indoor market.
Kilburn was originally serviced by the London & Birmingham Railway, with Kilburn High Road station opened in 1851. Today, Kilburn has excellent transport links. Kilburn Park is a zone 2 underground station on the Bakerloo line; at the other end of the high street Kilburn station is on the Jubilee line. Located on the high street towards Kilburn Park is the Kilburn High Road London Overground station. All stations offer quick, direct access to central, west and east London.
Many bus routes service the Kilburn area including the 31, 32, 206, 316 and 328. Kilburn Park tube station opened on 31 January 1915 as the temporary terminus of the Bakerloo line extension from Paddington station towards Queens Park. It was also one of the first London Underground stations built specifically to use escalators rather than lifts.
Kilburn has an interesting history. Its origins stem from a community of Augustinian canonesses; in 1134 Kilburn Priory was set up where Watling Road crossed the Kilburn brook; now where Belsize Road meets Kilburn High Road. The Priory owned much of the land in the area and was a shopping place for pilgrims on their way to the shrines at St. Albans or Willesden.
In 1536 Henry VIII dissolved the Priory, and there are now no remains of the building. The Red Lion and the Cock were set up in the middle of the 15th century to meet the needs of travelers on the major route. Later on the Bell Inn became famous for its spring heralded as cure for stomach ailments.
Of particular note the newsagent and future First Lord of the Admiralty W.H.Smith lived with his father at Kilburn House, just north of Kilburn Square. Foyles bookshop started in Kilburn, moving to Charing Cross Road in 1926. In 1837 the State Cinema, the largest in the British Isles, opened in 1937.
Recently, Kilburn has benefited from the opening of numerous restaurants, bars and the critically acclaimed Tricycle theatre. This art house cinema is very popular within the area. Many young professionals also live in Kilburn as it remains an affordable central London area.
