Winter Proofing Your Home: Our Asset Management Team's Top Home Tips For Winter

Let's talk winter-proofing.

Winter is a time of cosying up on the sofa with a hot chocolate, driving home to see loved ones and hosting festive feasts. It's also the time when the notorious UK weather hits, pesky pests look for warmth, and burglars are on the prowl.

But, with that being said, there are some everyday things you can start doing to ensure your home stays cosy and problem-free throughout the season.

We sat down with our Asset Management team for their expert tips on preparing your home for Winter.

Let's get into it!

How to avoid mould and condensation  - Jess Davies, Asset Manager

Dry Windows and Sills Every Morning

Start your day by wiping down your windows and sills; this prevents the build-up of moisture and helps to avoid mould.

Open Windows When Hanging Up Washing

Dying your clothes indoors can contribute to condensation; we know it gets chilly, but open a window to allow moisture to escape!

Cook with Pan Lids On and Extractor Fan On

Steam from cooking is a major contributor to indoor humidity. Keep the pan lids on, and make sure you turn on your extractor fan to minimise the moisture.

Pull Furniture Away from Walls

Moving the furniture slightly away from your walls creates airflow; this helps prevent mould, allowing air to circulate freely.

Ventilate Property by Opening Windows and Trickle Vents

You need to ventilate your home to reduce moisture levels, open the windows, and use your trickle vents regularly.

Top Tips for Avoiding Mice and Other Pests in Your Home - Holly Green, Asset Manager

Covering Household Waste

Pests like mice are always on the lookout for food, so make sure your household waste, like bin lids and food lids, are securely covered.

Store Food in Airtight Containers

This is super important for eliminating scents that might attract unwanted guests; you can usually find airtight containers in any local supermarket.

Set-Up Preventative Traps

If you've dealt with a pest problem before in the Winter, it's always worth setting up strategically placed traps to catch them before they get in!

Tips if You Are Going Away Over The Christmas Period - Mehul, Head of Asset Management

Create the Illusion of an Occupied Home

Use smart or timer bulbs to schedule lights. This creates the illusion of an occupied home, which will deter potential intruders.

Secure Doors and Windows

Before you leave your house, double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked.

Don't Leave Valuables on Display

Keep valuables out of sight to reduce the temptation for burglars. A clear view into an empty home should be avoided!

So there you have it, just a few tips on how to keep your home in tip-top condition during the Winter season!
