A local's guide

Back to all guides

Maida Vale is one of London’s most elegant and picturesque neighborhoods. Known for its tree-lined streets, charming Victorian homes, and iconic canals, Maida Vale offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of central London while still being well-connected to the city. This beautiful area is famous for its “Little Venice” canal district, where houseboats and waterside cafés create a serene and unique atmosphere.

What kind of vibe does Maida Vale have?

Maida Vale is a residential area that gives off a tranquil and affluent vibe. It feels like a village, with many people having lived here for years, and it has a great selection of local restaurants and shops. The neighbourhood has many beautiful Victorian buildings and mansions, making walks around the area aesthetically pleasing, especially along the canal. It's within walking distance to Notting Hill, Little Venice, and Saint John’s Wood, allowing for easy exploration of these nearby neighbourhoods.

Where's your favourite place to get a morning coffee?

Ginger! They just opened on Shirland Road recently, and it has become my favourite go-to coffee shop. The owners are so kind; they remember your name and always greet you with a big smile. They also serve gelato, so you can satisfy both your caffeine and sweet cravings.

What are your favourite restaurants to go for dinner?

I love Tsiakkos & Charcoal, it is a family-run Greek restaurant. The food is authentic, affordable, and absolutely delicious. If you're a fan of Indian cuisine, Dhaba@49 is a must-visit. Their butter chicken is the best I've had in London! Last but not least, I’m a big fan of KBBQ (who isn’t), and Gogi did not disappoint. Their BBQ is amazing, and they also offer a great selection for non-meat eaters. Highly recommend!

How would you spend a Saturday in Maida Vale?

I’d start my day by grabbing a coffee at Ginger, then walk along the canal and read a book on one of the benches. On my way back, I like to stop by Clifton Nurseries. It has amazing plants and flowers and a beautiful café that serves great brunch food. I love meeting my friends there and chatting the afternoon away before heading to The Hero for a pint. The Hero recently opened and has quickly become one of the hottest pubs in London. There’s always a buzzing atmosphere, and it’s lovely standing outside and enjoying the drinks!

Where's the best place to go if you want to be outdoors?

The Paddington Recreation Ground is great as it’s a big park with lots of greenery, exercise areas, and places for walking and relaxing. If you have a membership at the Paddington Sports Club, it also has nice tennis courts, a gym, and an outdoor seating area where you can enjoy food and drinks!

What would you say Maida Vale's hidden gem is?

Clifton Nurseries. It is tucked away between buildings, so it can be easily missed. Once you go in, you are immediately surrounded by a variety of indoor and outdoor plants. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing. They have a cute café inside a greenhouse. The food and coffee are great, and the service is friendly. I can spend the whole day there. It’s great for catching up with friends, a day date, or just a relaxing day.

Is there anything else you'd like to give a special mention to?

This is more holiday-related, but if you also love real Christmas trees, there is a Christmas tree shop right outside The Warrington Hotel! Outside the holiday period, it is a beautifully restored pub that serves good food and beverages.
